"As more students opt to enroll full-time or part-time in virtual learning programs, a growing number of states are considering proposals mandating that students take at least one online course before graduating high school."I came across this article today as I was preparing for my Sloan-C panel discussion on K-12 Distance Education Trends for next week. Accompanying these state proposals will be districts' considerations on which LMS to use. In the last year or so, there have been what I've been calling "augmented" or "mega" open-source learning management systems with unique, built-in features including:
    • learning paths (with either prescribed or self-defined competencies and objectives)
    • QR code certification verification
    • text-to-speech
    • direct connection to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks from within the LMS

    • rapid elearning course authoring tools (allow user to develop his/her own elearning content)

The reason is that 82% of those 6.1 Mio enrollments stem from Community College students. Enrollments are not students, some students have enrolled in more than one course, thus one should divide 6.1 by three to have the number of students taking OD courses. The majority of those courses are by CCs, al level under the bachelor, and they provide more or less only remedial education. Thus it is understandable that Ohio wants to cut the courses and make highschools responsible für the deficits of the students. German Universities just this fall introduced paid one-year pre-courses (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 16.9., "Vorbereitungsjahr an der Universität - Trainieren kommt vor Studieren, Birgitta vom Lehn).

There is no option to collaborate online with another student, or have access to enriched media that would enhance the learner's experience. If these courses were truly designed with the student in mind, it would offer opportunities for demonstration of higher order thinking skills, self reflection exercises, interactivity with other students, learning mentors and web based media, and ample opportunity for the student to become a self directed learner and create a learning network of one's own.- deborah.heal deborah.heal Nov 4, 2011
