By moving the functionality of the mobile device into its immediate surroundings through magnets, etc. and opening up the APIs, this raises the possibility of physically "embedded" devices that can be interfaced with instrument packages, multimedia systems, etc. Imagine a setup where you could walk into a classroom, jack in your iPad or iPhone and control the audio and video display. Interestingly, Phillips made a run at promoting the idea of 3D displays that didn't require additional eye wear starting in 2006. They gave up the effort in 2009 feeling the market was ready.   • Agree with PTAM (Parallel Tracking and Mapping) and near field communication the use of AR is upon us; not sure if I should post them here but here are the key links to show the amazing developments in this area. There are a couple of natural feature tracking or 3D object tracking libraries which have been made available via the Qualcomm AR SDK (http://developer.qualcomm.com/dev/augmented-reality) and the Metaio Unifeye SDK (http://www.metaio.com/software/sdk/). We should take into regard that there are different disciplines with a different grade of digitalization. Besides, students do not use many media and do not want more media in the university. They use media primarily for private use for entertainment and gaming, communication and keeping up contacts. In an extensive time-budget study (daily, five months long, in 25 different curricula or courses) we found that students use media for learning only 5 to 7 minutes per day and only longer before examinations. I do not adhere to the neo-liberal idea of letting everyone plan his career with a portfolio and enter the competition, at the moment having a portfolio is an advantage, but if all have one it will become meaningless and afford extra efforts to scrutinize and assess them. The same applies to using portfolio in education: students who are required to use a portfolio do not produce very original stuff, but if a group of students is free to use a portfolio then only some of the group produce brilliant thoughts and ideas whereas the others don't do anything.- tom.haymes tom.haymes Nov 9, 2011Rolf brings up some interesting points about the nature of technology adoption. I'd like to hear what the group thinks that this article, which obviously brings with it some controversy, means to our future focus. Most of the technologies that exist in it are not exactly new or unknown on the college campus. I agree with its conclusion that K-12 schools especially need to unlock restrictions on access to the digital world. They are based on groundless visions of bogey men spread by the media and politicians. Higher Ed generally doesn't suffer from this problem as we work off of the assumption that our students are adults. We do have to realize that, for better or worse, our students will live in this world and it is impossible to shield them from it. Therefore, they need to learn how to exist and succeed in it once they leave college. The Pew Foundation's wonderful February 2010 report on Millennials (http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1501/millennials-new-survey-generational-personality-upbeat-open-new-ideas-technology-bound) paints them as potentially the best-educated generation in our history--one with a real commitment to lifelong learning, and this "Digital Access" article offers encouraging news in terms of how learners are continuing to incorporate the process into their lives rather than relying on onsite and/or online classroom instruction as the foundation for all they do. If we avoid the either-or implications here (either classroom or personal learning environment) and find ways to encourage a seamless integration of all learning opportunities, we will help foster what the Millennials are pursuing and learn from their example.My own experiences with online collaborations while earning a master's degree better prepared me for what is often a tremendously collaborative and geographically challenging workplace, so I'm a big proponent of anything that helps these younger learners gain, from their own educations, the skills that will prep them for what so many of us are already experiencing.
